I just completed a three-day intensive training in the Pikler approach to childcare. Our last “assignment” was to write a letter to a child with our hopes, wishes, and beliefs. At the risk of being too personal, I decided it was worth posting to capture the emotional depth and impact of everything we learned.
My Dear Child,
I have so much hope for your future.
I am so deeply confident in the power of the love and care you receive in your early years to impact the course of your life. I am so deeply respectful of your natural abilities, of the grace with which you unfold innately, of the mindfulness you bring to every single moment. I wish everyone you encounter would learn from your total presence and awareness, from your resilience and persistence and perseverance.
My aim in caring for you is not just to enable you to flourish freely, but to learn from you. I am your student, and it is with utmost humility that I offer you my care and hope for your trust. I want nothing more than to preserve your fierce independence and curiosity, for you to grow to fully use your inborn capacity to change the world.
The future is yours and you deserve it, because only you have the innocent clarity needed to inspire love and untainted, respectful action. I hope every person you touch greets you with the same openness and willingness to learn that you bring to every experience. And I hope I can evolve into the best version of myself, in service of you. It would be my greatest honor and privilege.
